Fires de Sant Narcís: Girona's Most Beloved Festival
Every October, Girona lights up with the magic of Fires de Sant Narcís, the city's most cherished festival. Rooted in legend and history, and pulsing with contemporary energy, this multi-day celebration brings the entire city to life with parades, concerts, traditions, and joy for all ages.
The Legend of Sant Narcís (and His Flies)
The story begins in the 13th century, when Girona was under siege by French troops. As the tale goes, the tomb of Saint Narcís was desecrated by invaders, and from it swarmed a plague of flies so fierce they drove the enemy away. Ever since, the humble fly has become a symbol of protection, resilience, and local pride.
A Living Tradition
Today, the festival blends its historic roots with modern celebration. It spans more than a week, usually from late October to early November, and features a diverse programme that spills into every corner of the city, from the cobbled Old Town to the open lawns of La Devesa Park.
