Girona: 5 Things You Can’t Miss

Girona is a city that charms at every corner, from colourful houses along the Onyar river, to cobbled streets and the aromas of local bakeries tempting you inside. If you’re visiting for just a weekend stay, or even if you’re here longer, there are a few highlights you simply must experience.

We’ve teamed up with Laura Tours Barcelona (www.instagram.com/laura_toursbarcelona), an expert guide in both Girona and Barcelona, to share her top five things you absolutely can’t miss on a self-guided tour of Girona.

1. The Iconic View from the Eiffel Bridge

This is one of Girona’s most photographed scenes: the Eiffel Bridge (or Pont de les Peixateries Velles). Built in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel’s company, the bold red structure frames the colourful houses hanging over the Onyar River. Stop here for a photo, to watch the ducks paddle by and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot a coypu.

2. Step Inside Girona’s Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona can be found at the highest point of the city.  Although it is most often admired for its 90 Baroque steps, the true wonder lies inside. Its vast single nave, measuring almost 23 metres in widths, is in fact the widest Gothic nave in the world.  Its construction began in the 11th century and for this reason it combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles. The Tapestry of Creation, housed in the Cathedral’s treasure museum, is also a masterpiece of medieval art. Enter and purchase tickets at the top of the stairs or online in advance.

3. Walk Through the Valley of Sant Daniel

A short stroll from the Old Town takes you into the Sant Daniel Valley along the Galligants River, a peaceful escape into nature. Along the way, you’ll discover the Church of Sant Pere de Galligants and its former monastery, one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Catalonia. The Passeig arqueològic is an ideal place to walk, surrounded by stone walls, trees and well kept gardens.

4. Taste Girona’s Famous Xuixo

No Girona tour is complete without a xuixo. This flaky, sugar-dusted pastry filled with crema (similar to vanilla custard) was born here, and locals will tell you there’s no better way to eat it than to pair it with your coffee. Stop at a traditional bakery and enjoy it warm if you can. We swear by La Puntual.

5. Walk the City Walls

End your tour with a walk along Girona’s medieval walls (known as the Passeig de la Muralla). They circle the Old Town and offer panoramic views over the rooftops and as far out as the Pyrenees. For the most magical experience, time your walk at sunset, when the city glows and the sky is often accented with pink clouds. Easiest access points include Torre Gironella or near Plaça Catalunya.
